The original 26A group was formed to help complete the Chinook Hotel (now known as the Chinook Tower). The Chinook was originally started in 1930, but when the Depression hit, it sat vacant for nearly 20 years, just a 14-story concrete and rebar shell, locals called it "The Skeleton" and considered it a huge eyesore. A failed attempt at what was once expected to be “most modern hotel in the Pacific Northwest.” The community joined together to finish the building, unfortunately, this effort fell short of completion.
In the late 40's or early 1950 a small group of local leaders banded together to FINALLY complete the hotel, in exchange for funding the completion they received a lease on Room "26A" and presumably how we settled on the name 26A. The hotel opened in May of 1951. Since then, we have moved just twice, first to the towne plaza (Red Lion) and most recently to our current building on the corner of 2nd Street & Staff Sergeant Pendleton Way. 26A Club's membership originally was capped at 75, today we have roughly 110 members.
